It Couldn’t Be Done

While browsing my RSS feed this morning, I ran across a poem by Edgar Albert Guest that I wanted to note and share. Quite fitting for me personally and professionally with events of late.

It Couldn’t Be Done by Edgar Albert Guest

Somebody said that it couldn’t be done
      But he with a chuckle replied
That “maybe it couldn’t,” but he would be one
      Who wouldn’t say so till he’d tried.
So he buckled right in with the trace of a grin
      On his face. If he worried he hid it.
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
      That couldn’t be done, and he did it!
Somebody scoffed: “Oh, you’ll never do that;
      At least no one ever has done it;”
But he took off his coat and he took off his hat
      And the first thing we knew he’d begun it.
With a lift of his chin and a bit of a grin,
      Without any doubting or quiddit,
He started to sing as he tackled the thing
      That couldn’t be done, and he did it.
There are thousands to tell you it cannot be done,
      There are thousands to prophesy failure,
There are thousands to point out to you one by one,
      The dangers that wait to assail you.
But just buckle in with a bit of a grin,
      Just take off your coat and go to it;
Just start in to sing as you tackle the thing
      That “cannot be done,” and you’ll do it.

Do As I Say, Not As I Do

Anyone ever hear those words when they were a kid? Thankfully, my parents weren’t like that but I did hear “Stop crying or I’ll give you something to cry about!” Yeah, we used to get spankings back then. I never did understand that though. I mean, you’ve already thrashed me with a belt or a fly flap (fly swatter to you non-southern folks) and I’m crying my cute little eyes out, and now you’re gonna spank me again to make me stop? I wondered if all parents were crazy like mine. Now that I’m an adult, I know that it’s really the kids that are crazy. Us parents have it going on! Well…sorta.

Employee Retention

One of the hurdles of a manager is finding the right employee for a position and keeping them. Lately, the economy has prevented a lot of employees from being able to leave one position to go where the “grass is greener”, but now that it appears to be settling down, employees are starting to have more options. Now, more than ever, a manager has to work harder to keep those prize employees.

The easy solution would be to shackle the employee to their desk so they couldn’t escape, but I’m thinking that there is some sort of law against that. So unless you enjoy the bright orange coverall look and don’t mind bars on your bedroom windows, that may not be such a good idea. Instead, let’s make a plan to keep these folks so happy that they have to take a day off to be in a bad mood.

Employee Of The Year

For the third time in the past five years, I have received our company’s Employee Of The Year award. Every year, there are two awards handed out at our annual holiday dinner, Salesperson Of The Year and Employee Of The Year. Since the majority of the employees there are in sales, that doesn’t leave many people left for the Employee Of The Year award. So that makes me think, am I really worthy?

Ready or not, here I come!

In the day & age of personal branding, sometimes it’s hard to find time to get everything done. Between my day job, side projects, community theater & my family, it seems as though there are never enough hours in the day to learn and implement everything you need to in order to grow. From being a dad to my glorious daughters, to increasing my value as an employee, this will be one amazing ride. But, why ease into old age & retirement when you can slide in sideways screaming…
